An Italian Garden Supper
Menu, Wine Pairings & Tablescape Inspiration

Inspired by the fresh flavors and natural beauty of Italy, I recently hosted an Italian Garden Supper featuring a seasonal menu, thoughtfully paired wines, and a tablescape filled with fresh basil, lemons, and candlelight.
From the appetizers to the final glass of wine, I wanted the evening to feel elegant without being overly formal. I'm sharing our complete dinner party menu, wine selections, and hosting details for anyone looking to bring a little Italian inspiration to their own table.
An Italian-Inspired Dinner Party Tablescape
For the table, I kept things natural and understated. Fresh basil, lemons, greenery, and candlelight brought a garden-inspired feel to the dining room, while woven chargers, neutral linens, and gold flatware added warmth and texture.
Rather than elaborate floral centerpieces, I used potted herbs and simple greenery to create an inviting table that felt both beautiful and approachable.
Hosting Tip: Fresh herbs are a wonderful alternative to traditional floral arrangements. They're fragrant, affordable, and can be used in the kitchen long after your guests leave.

The Menu
I wanted the menu to feel fresh, flavorful, and inspired by Italian ingredients, with dishes that complemented one another throughout the evening.
Starters
Whipped lemon herb dip
Basil prosciutto-wrapped melon
Marinated olives
Main Course
Prime beef caprese
Crispy smashed thyme potatoes
Charred lemon garlic broccolini

Blood orange vodka spritz
Fresh herbs, bright citrus, ripe tomatoes, and seasonal ingredients brought the menu together beautifully. From lighter appetizers to savory entrées and a refreshing dessert, each dish complemented the next, creating a cohesive Italian-inspired dining experience.

Italian Wine Pairings
For our wine selections, we wanted to take guests on a journey through Italy, highlighting the diversity of its celebrated wine regions. With the exception of our opening Champagne toast, we chose Italian wines that showcased different grape varieties, flavor profiles, and winemaking traditions.
We began with crisp, refreshing whites before transitioning into the richer, more complex reds of Tuscany. Each selection was thoughtfully paired with the menu, allowing guests to experience how the flavors of the food and wine complemented one another. It was a wonderful way to explore Italy's wine culture without ever leaving the dinner table.
Our selections included:
Grand Cru Brut Champagne — A celebratory welcome toast paired with appetizers.
Vermentino — A refreshing Italian white wine with citrus and herbal notes.
Falanghina — A bright, aromatic white wine with stone fruit and floral characteristics.
Tuscan red blend — A versatile red to complement savory dinner dishes.
Vino Nobile di Montepulciano — An elegant Sangiovese-based Tuscan wine.
Brunello di Montalcino — A structured Tuscan red to round out the tasting experience.
From pre-dinner cocktails featuring our sage cucumber gimlet and blood orange vodka spritz to a curated selection of wines with distinct flavor profiles, the drinks were thoughtfully chosen to complement the menu and add to the overall culinary experience.

A Sweet Ending: Fresh Berry Olive Oil Cake
To finish the evening, we served a fresh berry olive oil cake topped with mascarpone and an assortment of fresh berries. The cake was light, moist, and just sweet enough, making it a lovely ending to a menu filled with fresh, Italian-inspired flavors.
Olive oil gives the cake a wonderfully tender texture, while the creamy mascarpone and fresh berries add a beautiful balance of richness and brightness. It's an elegant yet approachable dessert that's perfect for entertaining, especially when you want something that looks impressive without requiring elaborate decorating. It was a lovely way to end a meal filled with fresh, Mediterranean-inspired flavors.
